While recognizing the importance of the contribution that the increasing specialization of knowledge has brought to the understanding of political behavior and collective action, Contention aims to reconstruct the fragmentation of the scientific discourse by offering in each issue a coherent but diversified range of articles from different theoretical, methodological, and philosophical approaches.”

The Hollow Crown

The University of Cambridge now has access to The Hollow Crown, filmed adaptations of Shakespeare’s history plays produced by Rupert Ryle-Hodges , on the Drama Online platform.

The first series of The Hollow Crown brings together Richard II, Henry IV Part 1, Henry IV Part 2, and Henry V. Starring Ben Whishaw, Jeremy Irons and Tom Hiddleston, this continuous story of monarchy follows events during sixteen years of dynastic and political power play.

In Series 2, Henry VI in two parts and Richard III, tell the story of ‘The Wars of the Roses’, an exceptionally turbulent period in British history. Starring Benedict Cumberbatch, Hugh Bonneville, Judi Dench, Michael Gambon, Sally Hawkins, Sophie Okonedo and Tom Sturridge, these exhilarating and emotionally charged films feature some of Shakespeare’s most eloquent and powerful language.

The series was executive produced by Sam Mendes and Pippa Harris under Neal Street Productions in association with NBC Universal.

New Palgrave Dictionary of Economics Online URL change

The New Palgrave Dictionary of Economics Online has moved from its old URL

The Cambridge LibGuides Databases A-Z has been updated.  The knowledgebase supporting iDiscover has also been updated and this change will be reflected in the (final) MARC record update of 6 December 2017.

The New Palgrave Dictionary of Economics consists of 3,057 articles written by leading figures in the field including Nobel prize winners,  and is the definitive scholarly reference work for a new generation of economists.

Oxford Music Online and Oxford Art Online platform changes

Oxford University Press advises that on 7 December 2017 the location of articles and pages in the Oxford Music Online and Oxford Art Online will change.  OUP expect the “majority” of articles to re-direct.

We don’t know what the new URLs for the articles will be before the 27 November, so OUP advise that “pages within the site will need to be updated after the launch”.  You should update any bookmarks you may  have to articles when the new URLs are discoverable after 27 November.

The URLs for the platforms will remain the same:

Note on presence of playable Sibelius examples

Grove Music Online used to offer playable musical examples supported by the Scorch browser plugin, which (as of March 2016) was no longer supported by all Internet browsers. In light of this, OUP has temporarily converted the playable examples to static images. The new Grove Music Online site retains the static images. OUP appreciates that playable musical examples have been a valued resource on Grove Music Online, and apologize that this functionality is currently not available: “Our editors and technical teams have begun work to identify and implement a suitable replacement for the Scorch plugin that supports the scholarly needs of the Grove Music Online community and will be sustainable as we continue to build our playable example library in the years ahead. This is currently a rapidly evolving area of web technology, and we appreciate your patience”.

American National Biography Online platform change

Berliner Philharmoniker Digital Concert Hall trial

The University of Cambridge has trial access to the Berliner Philharmoniker Digital Concert Hall. 

Access to the Concert Hall is via this URL:

A pop-up window will appear which prompts you to register with your email address and password or to log in with an existing account. After registering / logging in, you can view all concerts, films and interviews in the Digital Concert Hall free of charge on all supported devices from the network of your institution or from home.

Each season, around 40 concerts are broadcasted live and they can also be viewed at a later date in the concert archive.  The archive already contains hundreds of recordings with all the great artists of classical music. There are also fascinating documentaries and bonus films.

Psychology & Behavioural Sciences Collection includes 500+ full text journals and 340+ full text journals with citations in PsycINFO in the subject areas of anthropology; emotional and behavioral characteristics; mental processes; observational and experimental methods; psychiatry and psychology.

Psychology & Behavioral Sciences Collection can be searched independently, but also allows users to  link to full text from citations within PsycINFO. These citations, when viewed via EBSCOhost, have the ability to link to articles from hundreds of full-text journals contained in this database.

China Comprehensive Gazetteers trial

CCG comprises a collection of more than 6,500 titles spanning all of China’s regions and covering the Northern Sung Dynasty up to the establishment of the People’s Republic of China.

East View’s CCG database presents a collection of difangzhi spanning eight centuries 1229-1949. With more than 6,500 titles presented in image and/or full text to date, CCG is a resource for research on China in various aspects: its political history, literature, and religion, as well as the biographies of famous personages, its culture, economic development and, of course, its geography and natural history.

More than just local gazetteers, CCG also includes source materials, dictionaries, specialized works on topography, palaces, gardens, travel and even foreign travel.

The source of the original materials is the collection at the National Library of China, whose holdings are extensive and often unique. CCG is especially rich in documents from the Qing dynasty. The number of Republic Period titles is also very large.

Three categories of gazetteers found in the database include:

• Comprehensive treatises on geography and administrative geography;
• Local gazetteers on local history, geographic features nd administrative geography history, religions, culture and education, economics, social society, agriculture, architecture, prominent persons including successful imperial exam candidates, etc. of local counties;
• Descriptions, records and travel notes on specific mountains, waters, hydraulic engineering projects, historical monuments and cultural relics, gardens and parks, borderlands, residences of minorities, and even foreign regions and countries.
